The bathroom designer who started under the floor.
Andrew Shenton was a plumber and heating engineer first. He began designing bathrooms out of his father's shop, opened his first showroom in 1999, and has spent over thirty years since doing both halves of the job — which is a rarer combination in this trade than it ought to be.
The story
Thirty years, and the order they happened in matters.
Most bathroom companies are design businesses that learned to manage trades. AWS went the other way. Andrew qualified and worked as a plumber and heating engineer, so he spent years seeing exactly how bathrooms go wrong — the waste with no fall, the stack that could never have been moved, the beautiful layout that needed a pipe run through a joist nobody had looked at.
He began designing custom bathrooms from his father's shop, and in 1999 opened a showroom of his own. The studio is now at Farnham Business Centre on Dogflud Way. The method has not really changed: understand the room, understand the services, then design — and never in the other order.
It is deliberately a small operation. Andrew designs and runs the jobs; Richard fits; Darren tiles. You get the same faces from the first measure to hand-over. That continuity is the reason several families here are on their second and third AWS bathroom rather than their first, and it is the only thing in this trade that cannot be bought in.
